Today’s nuggets are really just my take on an article I read the other day published on Bookstr.com titled “Why Did This Novel Top Amazon China’s Bestseller List?” This is particularly for those Planning to Publish or thinking about re-launching a stale project.
Here are 5 takeaways from the article:
Instead of creating a new wave, catch the wave This may seem counterintuitive, but think about it. The average person wants to differentiate and compete to such a degree that you miss the overflow of a greater cause. It doesn’t mean your message is insignificant because you grab the attention of your audience based on their interests. It frees you from having to dispense tons of energy, time, and yep dollar bills to create a wave from scratch.
Keep your pulse on what’s happening Interestingly, the author of the book in reference also wrote the amazingly popular TV show, but he had very little traction with the book prior to the show. That is to say, as a result of the show being well-received and becoming hugely popular, gave people a reason to go check for the book – to the tune of major sales and bestseller status.
Doing things in the right order Now, I want to be clear, I’m not suggesting you cannot be successful doing the opposite, but some things just make sense. Write the book first. I had a gentleman approach me on the topic a few months ago. He was a playwriter and was in the process of producing his first play. His question was, “Should I publish the book first? Or, should I take my play on the road, and then work on a book next year?” So, if you can feel where this is going, you know how I answered. BOOK FIRST, DUDE!
Why? Book first approach The book helps to establish your platform, credibility and starts a wave of motion for greater renderings. Using the example mentioned in the article, sales didn’t take off until the TV show got tons of attention. But consider the opposite, if the author hadn’t written the book and released it for sale, he would’ve missed a great opportunity. Instead, he capitalized on the opportunity and it has been a successful series of events.
